When he was barely three weeks old her family moved with him to Glasgow, Scotland. He studied at the Yoker Primary School and Hillhead High School. In 1939, aged 23, graduated in veterinary surgery at the Glasgow Veterinary College. The following year he served as field veterinarian in Thirsk, North Yorkshire, where he spent the rest of his life. On
November 5, 1941 he married Joan Catherine Anderson Danbury, which had
two sons, James, who is also a veterinarian, and Rosie, who will
continue a career in medicine.He
wrote several books, among them: "If Only They Could Talk", the first
semi-autobiographical book in a series that dealt with his office of the
Yorkshire veterinarian in the forties and life in the RAF during World
War II.His books, plain and simple
language, are full of funny anecdotes and incidents represent the life
of a veterinarian and achieved a huge success.English law prohibits advertising for veterinarians, so he took the pen name James Herriot to write their books. His books were adapted for film twice and television in a BBC series. Moreover, his books gave rise to numerous vocations of veterinarians throughout the world, among which I count myself as lucky that I got my hands on one of those books, by an aunt.
People
like him, showing that no is a loss to devote our time and love to
our "little brothers" gives me strength to keep going in this race!
